Help and Care

For Engelhard Arzneimittel, the partnership with pharmacists, doctors and patients means more than just offering high-quality pharmaceuticals. The company is therefore involved in various projects, which deal with health education and prevention.

Pädialog

Illness in middle or old age often has its origins in wrong attitudes towards health during childhood. The course to subsequent illnesses is set during childhood by incorrect nutrition, lack of exercise or inadequate development of the immune system.
Information on health matters and health education is an essential contribution to relieving our health system of its costs. Doctors can lay the foundations for healthy modes of behaviour in kindergartens and schools by informing parents.

Engelhard Arzneimittel has developed the Pädialog concept together with paediatricians, educationalists and other experts. "Pädialog", is made up of lectures on health education and prevention.
Current topics are as follows:
  • Prevention of addiction among children and adolescents
  • The normal development of pre-school children
  • Accident prevention
  • Infectious diseases
  • Nutrition - (no) child's play
  • Puberty - medical and psychological aspects
  • Media education during childhood using the television by way of an example
  • Children's and teenager sport
An educational guide, information material for parents as well as organisational support complete the programme.

The majority of German teenagers do not get sufficient medical care

Today, the preventive measures taken by doctors in respect of children normally end with medical check-up U 9 and are not taken up again until adulthood, where cancer screening is the most important preventive measure.

The results of a study on juvenile health revealed that 20 % of the teenagers already had problems with their skeletal structure. 13.7 % of the girls and 14.4 % of the boys were classified as being overweight. All young people between 12 and 14 years of age are entitled to medical check-up J 1. In order to help prevent teenage health problems, Engelhard Arzneimittel has worked out a programme for caring for young people in general practice.

Advice is offered on the following topics during special consulting hours for children and teenagers at various practices:

  • Education (in particular, explanation of anatomical and biological contexts)
  • Sexual problems
  • Puberty problems
  • Contraception
  • Acne
  • Vaccination
  • Metabolism
  • School and working situation
  • Sport
  • Dangerzones
The programme comprises a doctor's manual and various seminar blocks for implementing the special consulting hours in the doctors' practices.

The prevention of violence in schools
Aggression, mobbing and drug problems are often the order of the day and can endanger children and teenagers' health. As a further step in health education, Engelhard Arzneimittel supports a project focused on the prevention of violence in schools. The aim of the project is to train and appoint pupils as peacemakers and contacts for fellow schoolmates. They are supposed to learn how to act on their own responsibility, to get to know and appreciate themselves as well as others and develop social faculties. The course comprises a 3-day seminar and continuous mentoring for 1 year. A film on the seminar and an accompanying book provides schools and businesses with information on the project.

English Theatre

The English Theatre belongs to Frankfurt's cultural scene. The programme is entirely English and primarily includes productions, which have also been staged in London's West End or on Broadway, i.e. popular plays and musicals such as "Mousetrap", "Boyfriend", "The little shop of horrors", or "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". The theatre is privately owned and, for the main part, privately financed. Engelhard Arzneimittel supports the theatre as part of its contribution to Frankfurt's varied cultural scene.
